Mother's Day: No need to argue

Today is Mother's Day.  And there is no need to argue with me...I have the best mom!  She is such a good example to me on how to be a great parent.  It is an honor for me to be her daughter.  I can only hope that one day, when my girls are grown, I can have the same relationship with them that I have with my mom.  She is my best friend, one that I go to for sound advice.  Her life reflects Jesus in her service to others and to her community.

Happy Mother's Day, Mom!  I love you!

Wits end

I am currently at my wits end.  I have a 6 month old that is fighting her naps and screaming any time David or I put her down.  As you may know, its hard to get anything done when both of your hands are occupied.  Let alone having another child that needs some attention as well.

Speaking of this other child, Carson has been working on potty training.  She has been doing so well, except when it comes to going #2 on the potty.  The other day, we were visiting some friends at their home.  I look at Carson, and she immediately says "Don't look at me, mommy!"  A sure sign she has gone poop...in her underwear.

I'm sure there will be a day, not too far off, when I will look back at this and laugh.  But that day is not today.

Never thought...

I never thought I would be one to start a blog, yet here I am, sitting down and creating a blog. I apologize in advance for the lack of creativity you will find in my postings, but this really hasn't been my cup of tea. I found myself being drawn to blogging just today actually. It seems like an easy way to allow those that aren't plugged into other social media to get a look into The Birky 4.

So let me introduce you to my family. My husband, David, is a helicopter pilot for the Coast Guard. You might have seen him recently on "Coast Guard: Alaska" on the Weather Channel. We have 2 daughters. Carson is 2 and is so full of joy that her name should have been Joy! She is named after my dear grandma, Beulah Mae. Carson has recently been potty trained and let me just say that potty training is quite an experience. Morgan is 6 months old. She currently rolls to where she wants to go, fights her naps and much more laid back than her sister.

I am Misti. I have both a Bachelor and Master degree in social work. In my former life, I worked in the field as a therapist. Since having children, I have become a stay at home mom. Most days you will find us outside taking a walk or meeting friends at one of the local parks to play. Even in the rain...which it does here, often!

Oh and did I mention we live in Alaska? (Yes, I can hear you gasping) I bet when you think of Alaska, you think very cold, very dark winters and slightly warmer, always daylight summers, right? Well, you would be a bit wrong! (Gasp!) We live in the rainforest of Southeast Alaska. We do not get extremely cold. Our winters are actually more mild than an Indiana winter. The daylight is short during the winter, but tolerable (not all people think so, this is just my opinion). During the summer, we hit 70 degrees about once, and it is daylight from about 1 am till about 11pm. All in all, we have grown to love it here. We live in a great community that embraces the Coast Guard and it's families.
